The M-KEN Collective is a collaborative music project by students and faculty of the Music Design department at Senzoku Gakuen College of Music.

M-KEN releases compilation albums of pieces of music by students and faculty members twice a year, and presents DJ/live electronic performances on campus during the academic year.

This website collects all information and media relating to the M-KEN Collective's activities.

このコンピレーションに収録されているM研 COLLECTIVEのメンバー8名による7曲は2023年の冬に、「初まり」というテーマに基づいて制作されました。
様々な解釈を招く「初まり」のテーマから、DnBやアイドルソング、エレクトロニカ、ポップスなど、幅の広い音楽が誕生しました。

The M-KEN Collective presents their first compilation album release, "compilation #1 winter/spring 2023: 'hajimari'".

The 7 pieces included in this compilation were produced over the winter of 2023 by 8 different members of the M-KEN Collective, based on the thematic concept of "a beginning". The release brings together a wide range of musical styles and genres, such as drum and bass, idol & J-pop, and electronica, representative of the various musical inclinations held by members of the M-KEN Collective.

第1回コンピに続き、M研 COLLECTIVEの第2回コンピレーションアルバムとなる「compilation #2 summer/autumn 2023: “yuujuu fudan"」。

このコンピレーションに収録されているM研 COLLECTIVEのメンバー5名による5曲は2023年の夏に、「優柔不断」というテーマに基づいて制作されました。
決断力をコンセプトとした、第1回と対照的に穏やかなサウンドをフィーチャーしている今回のリリースが誕生させたのがピアノ曲、インストルメンタル、ボカロイド、ビーツやエレクトロニカなど、制作過程において様々な判断を経た多様な音楽作品。

The M-KEN Collective presents the next instalment of their compilation album series, "compilation #2 summer/autumn 2023: 'yuujuu fudan'".

The 5 pieces included in this compilation were produced over the summer of 2023 by 5 different members of the M-KEN Collective, based on the thematic concept of "indecisiveness". In contrast with the high-energy 1st compilation "hajimari", this 2nd release features quieter sounds that span genres such as instrumental music, solo piano works, electronica, vocaloid music, and electronic beats, representative of the various musical inclinations held by members of the M-KEN Collective.

M研 COLLECTIVEの第3回コンピレーションアルバムとなる「compilation #3 winter/spring 2024: “johakyuu"」は、能に由来する「序破急」の概念をコンセプトにしました。

第1回コンピの「初まり」、第2回コンピの「優柔不断」のキーワードとは異なり、抽象的ではなくより具体的に楽曲の形式が思い浮かぶ「序破急」の輪郭を意識している6曲を収録しています。
今回のコンピもビーツ音楽からインストゥルメンタル、邦楽ロック、テクノ、ボカロイドやエレクトロニカ、多岐にわたる音の世界を披露しています。どれも「序破急」の存在があるものの、解釈はそれぞれ違うというコンピレーション作品特有の楽しさを味わっていただきたい。

The M-KEN Collective presents the next instalment of their compilation album series, "compilation #3 winter/spring 2024: “johakyuu".

A concept that dates back to Noh theatre, "johakyuu" is closely related to the Hero's Journey-type narrative structure that is widely used in a range of different artforms. It follows a three-act structure, loosely interpreted as "exposition" -> "conflict" -> "resolution/climax", but can operate on a macro- or micro-cosmic level.
The 6 pieces collected on this album interpret "johakyuu" in a variety of different ways - some more obvious than others - and span genres from hip-hop, rock, and techno, to instrumental music, vocaloid music, and dance music.

We hope you enjoy the eclectic sounds of the M-KEN Collective's Compilation #3.

M研 COLLECTIVEの第4回コンピレーションアルバムとなる「compilation #4 summer/autumn 2024: “urahaku"」では、表拍から弾む「裏拍」をコンセプトとしました。

第3回コンピのテームとして取り上げた「序破急」と同じように、音楽的に捉えやすい「裏拍」から多様多彩な4曲が生まれました。
ジャンルやスタイルを問わず、重みを感じる「表拍・強拍」の存在によって、応答のようなものとして「裏拍・弱拍」の存在も不可欠。裏拍の強調の有無によってリズム感やテンポ感が全く違うものになり、人間が「ノリ」と認識するリズム感覚が強くなったり崩れたりする。そのような音の配置をふんだんに遊んでいるのが本コンピレーションに収録している楽曲たち。

The M-KEN Collective presents the next instalment of their compilation album series, "compilation #4 summer/autumn 2024: “urahaku".

Continuing on from compilation #3's concept of "johakyuu" - a word that pertains to the overarching structure of a piece of music - the fourth M-KEN compilation features 4 pieces of music that were created based on the idea of "offbeat" rhythms in music. The existence of an offbeat implies that there is a downbeat, or onbeat, on either side of it; emphasising the downbeat through placement of notes or dynamics has a considerable effect on the musical context - it may result in a harder groove, or an unstable rhythmic pulse. There are multiple ways to present, hide, accent, or reduce the effect of a downbeat, and these pieces of music all deal with downbeats in their own unique ways.
